I am a freelance PPC consultant, advising on, or managing, client campaigns outside of full-time employment. In my opinion, PPC offers unrivalled measurability compared to other forms of advertising. It’s quick and simple to manage and offers great ROI opportunities.

Pay Per Click (PPC) is advertising through search engines. Bid on keywords and your ads show in the search results. Pay only when a user clicks on your ad, hence the name.

Make the right choices when choosing which keywords to bid on and it is a very effective way to buy quality traffic to your website. Make the wrong choices, and it’s a very quick way to burn through your budget without getting anything in return.

Thankfully, PPC user interfaces give you everything you need to make informed decisions for managing your campaigns, making the job of a freelance PPC consultant both transparent and easier.

Combine PPC efforts with SEO for the most effective, integrated campaigns.

As a freelance PPC consultant, my first taste of PPC came from a workshop run by Business Link 6 years ago. With successful implementation for both employers and clients, I have subsequently developed my PPC optimistion methodology and documented what I feel are the 11 steps for building, managing and optimising your PPC campaigns.

In my marketing career, success in PPC is something I am very proud of. In particular, one of my top 5 online marketing achievements involved PPC.

Some PPC tips:

1. Check ad position using the Google Ad Preview Tool. Use this to see where your ads are positioned relative to competitor ads. Your searches will not be counted towards ad impressions so you will not lower the click through rates of your ads.

2. Ad position is not all about bid. Position is determined by the following formula: bid x quality score = ad position. Read up on quality score, but in essence, Google want to return the most relevant ads to users because it's about relevance and giving users a result that best fits with what they are searching for. Therefore, quality score is a relevance rating out of 10. Of all the factors that make up your keyword quality score, click through rate is the most important factor. Increase the click through rate and increase your quality score. This will put you in a position to pay less per click and hold a strong position because your ads are more relevant.

3. If there is demand (search volume) then you can tap into it. If there is no demand, then you're spending time managing a campaign that cannot work. Bin campaigns that do not yeild search volume, or set them up on the display network, but the key to success is focusing time and effort on developing successful campaigns and tapping into demand.
